Stephan Pyatnychko, Baritone

Biography | Repertoire

The appearance on the international operatic scene of a truly Italianate baritone commands notice – and Stephan Pyatnychko is such an artist, capturing important debuts and new productions in his first appearances in the West.

Stephan's vocal attributes demonstrate the most thrilling aspects of the Italian baritone: a large, superbly produced and forwardly focused voice, with a rich and warmly biting timbre that cuts through large orchestras and sends excitement through his audiences.

Stephan Pyatnychko made his debut at the Zurich Opera during the 2000 season as Manfredo in Montemezzi's L'AMORE DEI TRE RE opposite Samuel Ramey in a new production, followed immediately by a new production of DON CARLO opposite Jose Cura again at the Zurich Opera during 2001.

The Ukrainian baritone made his debut with the San Francisco Opera as Amonasro in AIDA during June 2001, and his debut at the Washington Opera in a new production as Renato in UN BALLO IN MASCHERA during 2002.

He made his debut as Renato in UN BALLO IN MASCHERA at the Deutsche Oper Berlin during the 1994 season and continued with that house during the following seasons in AIDA, IL TROVATORE, LA FORZA DEL DESTINO; while making his debut with the Teatro Municipal, Santiago, as Amonasro in AIDA during the 2005/06 season.

Pyatnychko continues to sing the big romantic baritone roles in Lviv, Kiev, St. Petersburg, Prague and other European houses, and will be making his debut with the L'Opera D'Avignon in Aida in 2010.

Stephan Pyatnychko was born in 1968 in the village of Hnylovody in the Ternopil region of Ukraine. He began his vocal studies at the Lysenko Conservatory in Lviv, and upon graduation in 1991 he became the house baritone for the Lviv State Opera (the Ivan Franko Opera and Ballet Theater) for several years.

It was at the Lviv Opera that he learned his craft and performed the core of his current repertoire, which includes Germont in La Traviata, Count di Luna in Il Trovatore, Renato in Un Ballo in Maschera, Tonio in I Pagliacci, the title role in Eugene Onegin, Robert in Tchaikovsky's Iolanthe, the title role in Rachmaninoff's Aleko, and Ostap in Taras Bulba by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Lysenko.

Stephan was a prize winner in the 1993 Belvedere Vocal Competition in Vienna, and previously in 1991, he won the first ever Solomea Krushelnytska (named for the Ukrainian soprano who was Puccini's first Madama Butterfly) International Opera Vocal Competition in Lviv, Ukraine.

Stephan's first offer to sing in the West came from the Paris Opera Bastille to cover Vladimir Chernov in Simon Boccanegra ... and he covered Gino Quilico in Lucia di Lammermoor for the Paris Opera in 1995, a year that brought him to America in a Special Gala Concert for the Baltimore Opera with such luminaries as Chris Merritt, James Morris, Florence Quivar, and Deborah Voigt – during which he had the audience on its feet and screaming for more!

Stephan's European debut took place in October of 1996 in the title role of Rigoletto for the Geneva Opera, followed by his American operatic debut as Count di Luna in Il Trovatore for the Baltimore Opera later in that season.

During the summer of 1997, he made his debut at the Bregenz Festival, Austria, in Rubinstein's The Demon, singing the title role which he reprised at the Konzerthaus in Vienna in March of 1998.

He returned to the Bregenz Festival in the summer of 1998 in Montemezzi's L'Amore Dei Tre Re, a performance that was ultimately recorded and released by the Koch Schwann label; and during the summer of 2000 he returned to Bregenz in Un Ballo in Maschera.

In New York, the baritone created a stir with his 1999 Carnegie Hall debut in Donizetti's rarely heard ADELIA opposite Mariella Devia and Paul Plishka, with Eve Queler and Opera Orchestra of New York, followed by Francesco in Verdi's I MASNADIERI again under the Queler baton at Carnegie Hall.
